RV Propane Regulator
72What is an RV Propane Regulator?
Lets begin by understanding first off what a propane regulator is. A regulator is something that controls an amount, degree, or level of something whether it be a gas or some other substance. Obviously in the case of the propane regulator we are speaking about, propane is the substance.
The common type of regulator used on most recreational vehicles and Motor Homes is a 2 stage regulator. The first stage helps by cutting container pressure to 10 pounds per square inch, or PSI as its commonly called. The second stage cuts down pressure to 11 water column inches.
Keeping pressure at these levels is important because most uses of appliance that run on propane operate at their peak under these conditions.
Tips on Maintaining an RV Regulator
Replacing an RV propane regulator is not too costly, but why replace it if you can keep it maintained and working for a long time. There are 3 checks you should do regularly which will keep your regulator in good working order. The following check-ups are listed in order below.
- The first check is called called a lockup test. The regulator should be checked so that you are certain that it is never allowed to increase above 14WCI and enter your propane distribution system. This is done as a safety precaution, and should be performed once a year.
- The second test you should perform is a operating pressure system check. This should also be done annually. The value of this test is to ensure that while you are running multiple appliances that are burning propane, that the pressure is maintained and constant.
- The final and third test which is also important to run is called the timed drop pressure test. This test is used to verify the existance of any leak in your propane system. While this test does not provide the source, it will in effect either tell you there is or isn't a leak. This test should be performed anytime the propane tank or system has been tampered with, including the removal, repair or replacement.
If these tips are followed, you can be assured that the life of your propane regulator will be prolonged, and that safety has been ensured along with a few dollars saved on one of your RV parts.

Should one ever be worried about static buildup on a propane tank when traveling?
